Hi! I wanted to write and thank you so very much for putting up these puzzles! I've been going through a stressful last few months, and will be going through a stressful several more, and the puzzles are incredibly useful as a stress-relief and pick-me-up. They're invariably beautiful and/or deeply meaningful and/or thought-provoking (some, like the Haitian tent-city, being all of the above)-- well-chosen and really good to work on. I was dismayed when the site was down a few days ago, and delighted when it came back up. So-- thank you! You are making my life way better by making these!

The tree is a Poinciana, Delonix regia, also called Flamboyant Tree. Both it and the African Tulip Tree are common around Brisbane, and yes, the tulip tree is now a declared weed here (and not nearly as attractive as the poinciana anyway).

I think he isolates children because the theme of child sacrifice is one the Bible brings up and *then* pushes aside. It certainly bothered me, when I was a child, but no-one connected the dots between things like the sacrifice of Isaac, the deaths of the Egyptian first-born, the need to sacrifice or "redeem" first-born animals or children, and the sacrifice of Jesus.

Thanks! I'm sure you'll like the book -- it's (an attempt at) a step-by-step reconstruction, so there will be lots of mentions of places you know.

DeSoto came ashore near my hometown of Bradenton, Fl. We (of course) got the whitewashed version of his 'explorations' in school. I will track this one down. Thanks for recommendation. Came here via Balloon Juice, btw. Great site.

Sounds like the book brings up an excellent point about the shared guilt which then gets pushed onto the Jews. Like that's never happened before!

Though I would not have isolated children; (and that would be a deeper guilt) it is instructive to think of how these religious practices are now shrouded in history and pushed aside. Just a quick tour of Mayan practices are instructional; and there's no reason to think these people were unusual in that practice, either.

This reminds me of a poem my father used to quote (I think from Edward Lear):
I never saw a purple cow.
I never hope to see one.
But I can tell you, anyhow,
I'd rather see than be one!

These cows might change his mind.
