Les Trés Riches Heures: Octobre

The Labour of the Months: October. The crop is being sown in front of the Louvre.

As Allen Farber points out, this is a view of the city of Paris in which very few Parisiens can be seen: though the fortress of the Louvre is shown in exacting detail, the peasants working in front of the walls are essentially a fantasy. Yet, as we can see in the other Limbourg brothers miniatures, the peasants themselves are not a perfect fantasy: the sower’s expression is not one of happy contentment, and his leggings are ragged. Even the field itself is remarkably realistic: it’s spotted with droppings from the horse pulling the harrow.
