Good Nonfiction Book of the Decade: 1491, by Charles Mann
Mann pulls together research that has utterly transformed our ideas about the state of the Western Hemisphere in 1491. Two continents’ worth of histories, cultures, and societies, only now starting to be re-discovered and understood. Compared to what I learned in school, this is alternate history: a different universe than we thought we know.
